The effects of Cosmetics

Make up contains some good ingredients, some not so good and some potentially dangerous. Because make up is worn daily, so much is absorbed into the skin or inhaled. It may lead to something as severe as cancer.

Some mild effects may be allergic reactions. These may be itchiness, dry skin or a rash. It may not be that noticeable or it may be quite severe.

Acne. Certain make up gets clogged in the pores in the skin, happens more with liquid foundation than powder. Then is not washed away properly and therefore creates blackheads which will inflame, (small bacterial infection) People make it worse by putting more makeup over the spots which adds more dirt and oil. Acne is common in teenagers.

Cancer. There has been a dramatic increase inn 'natural' cosmetics products over the last number of years. There are still many make up brands that use potentially dangerous chemicals in their makeup that may lead to cancer. Chemicals  like amorphous hydrated silica have been shown to contain small amounts of crystalline quartz, which has been linked to the development of cancer.

Healthier skin. Over the years makeup has changed and they now contain some chemicals which are good for your skin. Anti-inflammatory and antibacterial help make make up safer and have been introduced recently. Antibacterial ingredients help get rid of acne and reduce redness. Many brands include vitamins and moisturizers that keep your skin looking good even after makeup is removed. Some foundations and moisturizers include SPF, which helps to avoid sun damage and possibly melanoma.

We are under the impression that we are improving ourselves with the look of makeup, but what we don't realize is that us and our children may be harmed by these cancer causing agents and oils. It should be pointed out that many companies are finding ways to remove the harmful ingredients in these product. Make sure you check the ingredients of products before you buy.

Compostion of some Make Up

The composition of Lipstick-
Lipstick is a waxy solid that is moulded into a tube and is used for colouring your lips. It comes in variety of colours. It has a nonvolatile oil which helps it spread easily but stay in its tube. Common materials used in the making of lipstick are; beeswax, castor oil or carnuba wax. The dyes have to be insoluable in water so the colour will last. To do this they treat the lipstick with metal oxides. Eosin is used to dye lipsticks red.

The composition of Mascara
Mascara is a semi solid substance used to darken and thicken the eyelashes. It has been around for thousands of years. It was originally made up of soot or charcoal. But these are no longer used as they are considered hazardous.
To make the mascara black carbon black is used. Oils are used in mascara for lubrication, oils such as mineral oil, linseed oil or castor oil. Most mascaras contain guanine which gives it a shine. Along with lipstick mascara also contains beeswax.
It was once believed that mascara contained bat droppings since guanine is found in the droppings, it is said this is not true though.

The composition of Foundation
is made up of oil and water emulsion containing a fatty acid and some colour.
Face powder is more complicated. Its made up of talc- to help it spread, chalk- to give it moisturising qualities, magnesium stearate, zinc oxide, titanium oxide and pigment for colour.
Here is a recipe to make your own liquid foundation, I personally haven't tried it but would love to hear what it is like.

The composition of Eyeliner
For liquid eyeliner- Its a mixture of emulsifiers and black pigment to colour the liquid.
The pencil eyeliner is used with kohl. Which is made of lead sulfide.

The History of Cosmetics

Cosmetics have been around for quite some time and it is hard to date them back.  They have been  dated back from around 10000 BC
Ancient  Egyptians wore cosmetics, men and women. Black kohl was used on the eyes and Scented oils were rubbed into the skin.  Also some women wore eye shadow made out of crushed beetle wings and natural minerals.

In 1600 AD women started using lead dyes to get a paler look. This then was proved harmful to the skin and caused
disfigurements.
The influence of movie stars and celebrities encouraged more people to wear more cosmetics. Lipsticks became popular especially red colour. In the 1960’s lipsticks became popular in many colours such as pink and pale peach. And then in the 1980’s other colours such as blue, yellow orange green and purple.

Make up has changed greatly throughout the years.

What are cosmetics?

I think this topic will interest many people as so many women can relate to cosmetic products.
So first of all, what are cosmetics? Cosmetics are used for the improving or modifying the body, usually face and hair. It is designed to ''beautify'' the body by application.
Cosmetics are used every day by many people all over the world.
Some cosmetics that I will discuss in my blog will be the composition and uses of the following:-
-Foundation
-Mascara
-Eyeliner
-Lipstick/Lip-gloss
- Eye shadow
-Bronzer/blusher
-Powder
-Shampoos
-Soaps
You may be surprised with what you find some make-up is made out of. I will also say why these products are related to the geographical world.
Many people don’t think about shampoos and soaps when the word cosmetics is used, but in fact they are in the category of cosmetics as they used for ‘improving or modifying the body’
In my next blog I will start with the History of cosmetic products and how it has changed throughout time.
